ALDOUS HUXLEY ... "WHAT YOU NEED IS A GRAMME OF SOMA "
" WHAT YOU NEED IS A GRAMME OF SOMA "
Aldous Huxley was an English writer, philosopher, and one of the most prominent intellectuals of the 20th century. Over his lifetime, he authored nearly 50 books spanning satirical fiction, dystopian literature, and philosophical essays. He is the most famous person with this name and it's meaning is "old" or "wise."
Huxley was born into a highly distinguished family of scientists and intellectuals. His grandfather was the famous biologist T.H. Huxley. He initially planned on a career in medicine, but a severe case of keratitis at age 16 left him partially blind for a time, forcing him to learn Braille and abandon laboratory science. He pivotally shifted to literature, graduating from Balliol College, Oxford. Interestingly, during a brief stint teaching French at Eton, one of his pupils was Eric Arthur Blair, who later wrote under the pen name George Orwell.
Huxley’s career can be understood through four distinct phases, each defined by monumental books. Below are just a few:
Crome Yellow (1921): His debut novel, capturing the aimless intellectual conversations of guests at a country estate.
Point Counter Point (1928): A structurally complex, musical novel that scathingly illustrates the breakdown of social and marital values in the 1920s.
Brave New World (1932): His absolute masterpiece. Set in a futuristic "World State," humanity is artificially engineered into predetermined castes and conditioned to love its own servitude through technological pleasures, consumerism, and a synthetic happiness drug called Soma. Unlike Orwell’s 1984—which feared state censorship and physical pain—Huxley feared a society so drowned in trivial distractions, sensory entertainment, and informational overload that people would willingly surrender their freedoms.
The Doors of Perception (1954): A highly influential non-fiction book documenting his clinical experiences taking the hallucinogenic drug mescaline. The rock band The Doors famously took their name from this book title.
Huxley passed away on November 22, 1963. Because his death occurred on the exact same day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, his passing initially received very little media coverage, though his literary footprint remains massive today. Encyclopaedia Britannica
