The phrase "flag-sucking" is a famous pejorative used by Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson to criticize blind nationalism, media cowardice, and the uncritical acceptance of government authority.
Thompson said "American journalism I think has been cowed and intimidated by the massive flag-sucking, this patriotic orgy that the White House keeps whipping up."
