Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915–1973) was a queer Black woman and a musical force of nature who bridged the gap between the sacred and the secular, earning her the title "The Godmother of Rock and Roll".

Sister was also a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. She gained popularity in the 1930s and 1940s with her Gospel recordings, characterized by a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and electric guitar.
